What Happens To Waste Now?
South East Wales generates approximately 5 million tonnes of waste every year.
Enviroparks at Hirwaun will be able to process approximately 5% of this total or about 250,000 tonnes per year.
The breakdown of this waste in our region is as follows:
- Municipal Solid Waste
Approximately 1,000,000 tonnes with 160,000 tonnes arising in RCT and Merthyr Tydfil alone. - Industrial Waste
Approximately 500,000 tonnes. - Commercial Waste
Approximately 500,000 tonnes. - Construction and Demolition Waste
Approximately 2,875,000 tonnes. - Hazardous Waste
Approximately 100,000 tonnes - Agricultural Waste
Approximately 25,000 tonnes
Whilst local authorities are achieving recycling rates of about 25%, the 75% not recycled is simply buried.
