What Happens To Waste Now?

South East Wales generates approximately 5 million tonnes of waste every year.

Enviroparks at Hirwaun will be able to process approximately 5% of this total or about 250,000 tonnes per year.

The breakdown of this waste in our region is as follows:

  • Municipal Solid Waste
Approximately 1,000,000 tonnes with 160,000 tonnes arising in RCT and Merthyr Tydfil alone.
  • Industrial Waste
    Approximately 500,000 tonnes.
  • Commercial Waste
    Approximately 500,000 tonnes.
  • Construction and Demolition Waste
    Approximately 2,875,000 tonnes.
  • Hazardous Waste
    Approximately 100,000 tonnes
  • Agricultural Waste
    Approximately 25,000 tonnes

Whilst local authorities are achieving recycling rates of about 25%, the 75% not recycled is simply buried.
